How serious are varicose veins?

Varicose veins start with being a cosmetic inconvenience, however if left untreated can lead to ulcers, sores and other complications that are caused by poor blood flow in the veins. Medical conditions that may develop include:

  • constant itching
  • pigmentation around the ankles
  • mild swelling of the feet
  • occasional blood clots in the veins
  • infection of the vein
  • Leg pain, often described as being ‘heavy’ or ‘tired’
  • Increasingly unattractive appearance of the leg.
  • Fat tissue developing under skin. This will harden because of high blood pressure in a vein.
  • Complex varicose veins that can limit normal activities like walking and can make it difficult for sufferers to exercise.
