How does laser hair removal work?

Laser light is used to transmit light energy along the pigment in the hair, known as melanin. This energy damages and disables the hair follicle on reaching the hair root, thus stopping hair from growing back.

Melanin exists in both hair and skin, but the aim of laser hair removal is to target only the melanin in the hair. The scientific name for this principle is selective photothermolysis (SPTL).
