Laser Tattoo Removal FAQs

Patients often have a lot of questions before beginning treatment for laser tattoo removal. Here are a selection of our most frequently asked questions to help you understand the treatment in more detail.

How many treatments will i need?

We usually advise a minimum of 6-10 treatments will be necessary, usually around 4-8 weeks apart. However this does vary from person to person depending on the size of the tattoo, the colours involved and the depth of the ink. We will be able to design a specific treatment plan for you at your consultation.

Does it hurt?

The treatment itself produces a slight stinging sensation, which can be uncomfortable but subsides following treatment. Patients have reported that the sensation is similar to that of an elastic band being pinged against the skin. However it is not a painful treatment.

Is there any post-treatment procedures i need to follow?

We advise wearing a high SPF on the area to protect it from sun exposure. We recommend Heliocare SPF 50. In the 24 hours following treatment you should avoid sun exposure entirely. We also advised that you keep hydrated.

How does laser tattoo removal work?

Laser tattoo removal works by targeting the ink blobs within a tattoo, and breaking them down into tiny fragments. These fragments are then dispersed and absorbed by the blood stream. You can find more information about how laser tattoo removal works here.
