How Does Botox Work?
Botox, or botulinum toxin type-A, is a natural, purified protein that works by blocking nerve impulses from reaching muscles and thus preventing wrinkles from forming. The most common areas that it is used to treat are the forehead lines, ‘frown lines’ between the eyebrows, and ‘crow’s feet’ around the eyes. Fine lines and wrinkles become more apparent with age due to a number of reasons, most commonly UV exposure, collagen depletion in the skin, and repeated muscle contractions through facial movement. By relaxing the muscle, Botox prevents your muscles from contracting which improves the appearance of existing fine lines and wrinkles and prevents others from forming.
The Botox is injected directly into your muscle using a fine needle to minimize discomfort. The Botox treatment usually only takes around 15 minutes and there is no downtime afterwards, meaning that you can get back to your normal daily activity afterwards. We do ask patients to avoid any strenuous activity, and also lying down, for several hours after having Botox in Leeds. Usually the only side effect, if you have any at all, is some mild bruising at the site of the injection, and this normally disappears after a few hours.
Results of the Botox become apparent around 5 to 10 days after your treatment. We offer our patients a Botox check two weeks after their first treatment to ensure that they are happy with the results and, if necessary, give a slight top-up of the Botox. Results last between 3 and 6 months, and with repeated use the results tend to last longer.
