skin new yearTips to combat winter skin and keep a healthy glow this party season…

Tis the season to be glowing! Its that time of year ladies and gents, parties and events are filling our calendars and of course the New Year is closing in on us, all of which are likely documented by infamous selfies and group snaps a plenty. Not to mention the winter cold can bring about many changes in the way your skin looks and feels…

But fear not, we have you covered with some of our skin survival tips to ensure that your skin is not ravaged by the cold winter weather and stays looking fresh, glowing and party ready throughout.

Dry air is caused by cold weather and low humidity levels which strips the skin of precious moisture. Without prompt care and attention this can lead to cracking and bleeding. Central heating is another factor which tends to be overlooked when trying to retain skins moisture, as do hot baths, showers and harsh cleansers.

To keep skin looking smooth and youthful you need to counteract these effects to reduce itching, chapping and redness… here are our tips to keep your skin at its best and feeling more comfortable this season.

  1. Clean with Lukewarm Water

Hot baths and showers feel great during winter, but whenever you can, choose lukewarm water to avoid stripping your skin of its all important oils which help to protect your skin and keep it soft and supple.

  1. Moisturise Directly Afterwards

Moisture is essential right after you wash and applying moisture to damp skin helps seal that dampness into the skin. Keep a bottle handy near the bathtub and don’t be afraid to use liberally overtime you wash your face.

  1. Consider Moisturiser Carefully

Petroleum-based ingredients within some over-the-counter moisturisers can further dry your skin through the winter months. A smart formula that has natural, nourishing ingredients would be a safer choice. Opt for an oil-based rather than a water-based solution as its more likely to help skin retain moisture during winter. Try Jan Marini Bioglycolic Face Cream, a highly moisturising cream which helps to soothe and condition painfully dry skin and contains Glycolic acid as well as Hyaluronic acid for added glow.

  1. Protect your Skin

Pull out your stylish gloves and scarves to help protect skin from cold winds, rain and snow. Another important factor… sunscreen! Winter sun can easily be overlooked, but it can also be just as damaging as the summer sun, apply a safe option such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to exposed areas. Try Obagi Sun Shield SPF50 for example.

  1. Consider Humidity to avoid Dehydration

Central heating systems dry out the air, consider installing a humidifier in your home, particularly where you sleep, this will put moisture back into the air and help prevent your skin from drying out.

  1. Drink water for Hydration

We tend to turn mostly toward hot drinks during winter which leaves out our much needed water intake but don’t forget that your skin needs hydration from both the inside and out. Try swapping your hot cocoa for a little warm water with lemon. This tasty substitute can be refreshing and hydrating at the same time.

  1. Exfoliate Skin Care

Its easy to forget to help the skin shed off dead cells during winter, particularly on our hands. Yet if dead cells are plentiful, moisture can’t penetrate. Find an exfoliating mask, such as Jan Marini’s ‘Sugar Plum’ to use on both your face and hands, as well as gently on your lips. Be sure to follow immediately with moisture so that a smoother appearance can be seen. Try a microdermabrasion or Obagi Blue Radiance skin peel to accelerate the growth of new skin.

  1. Chemicals – Avoid Toxins, Allergens and Irritants to Protect your Skin

Especially if you have eczema, psoriasis or dermatitis, you should avoid allergens and irritants that may trigger a flare up. Winter skin is more fragile, so avoiding fabrics that may irritate your skin (like wool) and chemical laden detergents would be a good tip to keep in mind. Instead, use mild cleansers and moisturisers designed specifically for sensitive skin.

Dermal Fillers Manchester | Skin MedicalIt’s no secret. Your skin changes as you grow older. But unfortunately, unless you paid special attention to your skin from a young age, the signs of ageing are hard to ignore.

The way you treat your skin throughout your lifetime will most definitely have an effect on the way you look later on in life, however the aging process cannot be avoided. It can, however, be slowed down.

The team here at Skin Medical have gathered some of the most voiced concerns from women about how ageing affects their appearance, followed by our solutions on how you can tackle them.

Lines and Wrinkles

Perhaps one of the most obvious, and hated, signs of ageing is of course those pesky lines and wrinkles. Whilst most women begin to develop these in their late twenties, they can become much more prominent as time goes on. Whilst softer lines can be treated using a number of treatments, the deeper, more obvious ones may require dermal fillers to restore plumpness in the face. Just one course of fillers can last up to twelve months, so with very little maintenance, you can dramatically enhance the natural beauty of your face.

Dull, Uneven Skin Tone

Another common skin complaint is a dull uneven complexion. Factors associated with the development of dull skin include smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, dehydration and poor diet. These triggers are known to deprive your skin of nutrients and oxygen, which causes the dull skin tone. However, there are treatments that can bring back the radiant glow that is associated with younger, healthier skin. Medical microdermabrasion in particular, works by removing the old, dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. This leaves the underneath layers of skin looking rejuvenated, as the procedure stimulates the production of collagen and new skin cells.

Blotches and Age Spots

In most cases, age spots, also known as liver spots, are caused by many years of exposure to UV rays from the sun. These rays accelerate the production of melanin in the skin, so prolonged exposure can lead to age spots developing, where the melanin become clumped together, or is produced in high concentrations. CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing can help to even out skin tone where age spots are concerned. The laser is used on the top layers of skin to vaporise and peel, improving the quality of the skin. This works as the it encourages the body to produce more collagen, which can ease the appearance of sun damage, pigmentation, wrinkles and fine lines.

For more information on any of the treatments mentioned above, or for information on how to address some of the other signs of ageing, contact our specialist Manchester based skin clinic to book an appointment.

Treatments for Winter Skin | Skin MedicalFrom the moment winter approaches, your skin can begin to feel the affects. The cold, chilly weather can lead to your skin becoming dry and scaly, or it may trigger your rosacea and bring on thread veins on the face, or just lead to general blushing and flushing.

Unfortunately, winter is also party season. With a mountain of Christmas and new year parties to attend, can you really afford to have dull looking, dry skin? When moisturiser just doesn’t cut it anymore, there are a number of cosmetic skin treatments that will give you glowing summer skin all year round.

Chemical Skin Peels
Chemical skin peels are a fantastic way of rejuvenating dull skin, as well as treating pigmentation problems and acne. This treatment works by removing the dead skin cells of the surface of the face, to expose fresher and healthier skin that lies underneath. Chemical skin peels aren’t as harsh as you may think, there are gentle treatments that are suitable for even the most sensitive winter skin.

Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion also work to remove the dead skin cells on the surface of the skin, making it look dull and grey. This treatment is a more natural way of rejuvenating the skin. It works by crystals gently being passed over the skin, which removes old, dead or flaky skin, which is the sucked away by a soft vacuum. These crystals exfoliate and polish the skin beneath, making your skin look refreshed and supple.
