What is sun damaged skin?

The sun's harmful UV rays can damage our skin. This damage, often called photo damage, causes our skin to age prematurely. Ageing skin loses elasticity, causing fine lines, wrinkles and enlarged pores. It can also suffer from pigmentation problems such as age spots, which occur when abnormal amounts of melanin become concentrated in one area. Because melanin gives our skin colour, these areas are noticeably darker than the rest of our skin.
  • How can it be treated?

  • We use Intense Pulse Light (IPL) technology to direct targeted bursts of light energy at the affected areas. Each pulse produces specific light wavelengths that are absorbed into the skin and turned into heat energy. The heat energy then breaks down abnormal concentrations of melanin, which removes discolouration from the skin. Heat energy can also stimulate cells that produce elastin and collagen, which reduce wrinkles and fine lines leaving skin looking revitalised.

  • How many treatments will I need?

  • The amount of treatments you'll need depends on extent of the sun damage. However, we use high specification IPL equipment, which means you'll need fewer treatments with us than a clinic using less effective laser equipment.

  • Will it hurt?

  • It doesn't hurt, although some patients notice a stinging sensation with ever laser flash. Because the treatment is so straightforward, you'll be able to return to your daily routine straight away.

  • When will I see the results?

  • After the first treatment, your skin should feel refreshed and rejuvenated. However, you may want to continue treatment to produce the best possible effect.
