Laser Hair Removal

Hair removal by laser achieves dramatic results with little discomfort or hassle, resulting in permanent hair reduction and substantial removal, creating smooth skin for far longer than most other methods.
It is quick, convenient and low-risk; and also far cheaper than you might expect.
The process is non-invasive and requires very little recovery time. All you have to do afterwards is continue caring for your skin – and enjoy the results.

About laser hair removal
When you think about hair removal, the first methods that spring to mind are likely to be shaving and waxing.
These traditional solutions may seem simple and cost-effective – if performed at home – but their limitations are well known.
Shaving carries the risk of nicks, cuts and ingrowing hairs; and results in fast regrowth of bristly hairs which can irritate the skin. It is not recommended for removing hair from large areas, such as full legs or backs. The most frustrating part of all is that regular shaving can actually stimulate hair growth and make the problem worse.
Waxing lasts longer than shaving, but a person has to wait for their hair to become a certain length before it will be effective. Even then, due to the cycle of hair growth, significant amounts of hair can be missed – so it doesn’t really keep skin smooth much longer than shaving. It is also quite an aggressive approach and can cause a great deal of discomfort.
Both methods are time-consuming and have to be repeated often.
There is also the more extreme option of electrolysis. It does achieve permanent hair removal, but is very painful and can cause scarring.
What are the advantages of laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal is no more time-consuming than salon waxing – and, when calculated by surface area, it is also less expensive.
Best of all, it lasts much longer.
At Skin Medical, the procedure is safely carried out by qualified, experienced medical professionals who will give you advice both before and after treatment.

How effective is it?
Skin Medical's Lighsheer laser hair removal has been approved by the USA's Food And Drug Administration (FDA) for the achievement of permanent hair reduction and is the gold standard amongst other systems..
An initial course of 6 treatments is usually recommended, about 6 to 10 weeks apart. Following this, you should only need occasional sessions (perhaps twice a year) to maintain the result.
After the initial course of treatments, patients will usually see a substantial hair reduction in the treated area. Any small amount of hair which does grow back tends to be lighter and finer than before.
For more information about the hair growth cycle and its relationship with laser hair removal, please visit our Technology and treatment page.
How does laser hair removal work?
Laser light is used to destroy pigment in the hair, known as melanin. This damages and disables the hair follicle, stopping hair from growing back.
Melanin exists in both hair and skin, but the aim of laser hair removal is to target only the melanin in the hair. The scientific name for this principle is selective photothermolysis (SPTL).
Each person’s needs tend to differ slightly, depending on factors such as age, skin type, amount of hair, hair colour and hair texture.

Is laser hair removal right for you?
Your skin type and hair colour are key factors in determining whether you are a good candidate for laser hair removal.
However, even if you are not a traditionally ideal candidate, Skin Medical can still consider whether treatment is possible and advise you accordingly.

Skin types are determined by the Fitzpatrick system, which was created by Thomas B Fitzpatrick (MD, PhD) of Harvard Medical School in 1975, by measuring responses to sun exposure.
It has six categories:
