Female Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal for women is a convenient and effective beauty treatment – but can also be a welcome solution to distress caused by unusual or excessive hair growth.

The traditional methods of shaving and waxing may seem easy and cost-effective, if performed at home – but both can be discomforting or painful; and have to be repeated often. This is particularly true of leg waxing and bikini waxing.

By contrast, laser hair removal is a genuine long-term solution. It is less expensive than salon waxing and no more time-consuming or expensive.

At Skin Medical, the procedure is safely carried out by qualified, experienced medical professionals who will give you advice both before and after treatment.

Unusual female hair growth

It is important to explore the underlying reasons for excessive hair growth. This is because it is always wise to ensure your body is healthy and investigate anything abnormal – but also because the cause may determine the best type of treatment for you.

Causes of excessive hair growth in women include:

  • The normal ageing process.
  • Excessive use of temporary removal methods such as waxing, tweezing, creams and depilatories, as these actually stimulate hair growth.
  • Reactions to certain medications.
  • Heredity.
  • Pregnancy.
  • Insulin resistance issues.
  • Glandular and/or hormonal imbalances.
  • Hirsutism (an increased level of androgens in the body, causing thick dark hair on the face, chest, abdomen and back).

In some women, the cause may be polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), which is a serious condition and must be discussed with your GP.

For more information about PCOS, please visit our Polycystic ovarian syndrome page.

An initial consultation with a Skin Medical practitioner can establish whether you are a suitable candidate for hair removal. If we conclude that you require alternative treatment or need to seek advice from your GP, we will advise you accordingly.

Treatments by body area

The length and cost of each procedure varies depending on the size of the area being treated, but it is rarely more than a couple of hours.

In smaller areas, such as parts of the face or neck, the actual procedure can take as little as 5 or 10 minutes.

For more information about the process, please visit our Technology and treatment page.

Face

Upper lip

up to 10 minutes

The most common problem areas are the upper lip, chin and sides of the face. Dark hair is generally the most troublesome, which is fortunate because dark hair responds the best to laser treatment.
Waxing and shaving are not recommended for female facial hair removal as the skin is very sensitive. Bleaching can also cause problems.
In some women, the cause of unusual facial hair may be polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), which is a serious condition and must be discussed with your GP.

PLEASE NOTE: Laser hair removal is not recommended for treatments around the eyes. Tweezing, waxing and threading are best for eyebrow shaping.

Underarms

15 to 20 minutes

This is one of the fastest and most popular areas for laser hair removal. The method is particularly useful for women with excessive or fast-growing underarm hair.

Bikini line

up to 30 minutes

Laser hair removal in the genital area is less painful than waxing and can be applied in whichever pattern the candidate prefers.

Arms

up to 60 minutes

Hair growth on the forearms is normal, but can sometimes also occur on the upper arms. Either of these is easily treated by laser hair removal.

Legs

60 to 90 minutes

These are large areas to maintain with regular shaving or waxing. Laser hair removal avoids the irritation of nicks, cuts and ingrowing hairs – and frequently repeated applications.
