What Is Bruxism?
Bruxism is the medical term for teethgrinding, typically accompanied by clenching of the jaw. The name comes from the Greek brugmós, meaning gnashing of the teeth.
Bruxism is an oral condition that occurs in many people at some time in their lives; however is not considered a health problem in most cases, often being a relatively mild and intermittent condition.
While Bruxism may be a day or night activity it is commonly recognised as a sleep disorder as it is during sleep that the majority of health issues can be caused. Bruxism is even known to occur during cat naps and gentle dozing.
Botox As A Treatment for Bruxism
Botox (botulinum toxin) is a commonly used medical treatment for Bruxism which can be seen to lessen the effects of Bruxism in a relatively short time, although each treatment will be an individual experience.
Botox treatment for Bruxism can be completed in around ten or 15 minutes with results often visible within a few days.
However, it must be warned that side-effects of Botox injection can occur. Sometimes bruising can occur however this is not frequent. In some cases serious side effects can occur with Botox treatment (see below) so always take expert medical advice when considering a Bruxism Botox treatment.
Skin Medical is registered by the Care Quality Commission which demonstrates and confirms a Quality Assurance of Treatments and safeguards patient safety.
How Botox For Bruxism Works
Botox is injected to weaken muscles and as such has been used extensively in cosmetic procedures to relax the muscles of the face.
Botox was originally developed for cosmetic use but is now available for medical treatments including Botox jaw reduction treatment, i.e. Masseter Hypertrophy Botox treatment.
Botox can only be prescribed by a doctor or qualified prescribing clinician.
Botox treatment for Bruxism patients can experience relief from jaw aches and pains, soreness and headaches.
Botox treatment for Bruxism involves a relatively pain free injection of Botox, as most patients will testify.
In all cases at Skin Medical you will be advised by a specialist medical professional who will advise you on your treatment programme and give you information on likely results, including any potential side effects over the short and longer term; as well as any other activities, procedures or precautions to take.
At Skin Medical patient health, safety and satisfaction are always our number one priorities.
Bruxism & The Masseter Muscle
Bruxism can also be regarded as a repetitive disorder involving the unconscious contractions of the masseter muscle, the masseter muscle being the major muscle that moves the jaw.
Botox treatment for Bruxism involves the weakening of the muscle just enough to create a reduction of Bruxism symptoms such as grinding and clenching. However, the main function of the masseter muscle remains unaffected.
Botox For Bruxism - Stop Teeth Grinding
Positive effects from Botox treatment for Bruxism can often be seen quite quickly within a few days; however it may involve a short series of injections in total for a more permanent effect; as well as updated treatments throughout the year. In all cases you will be advised on a course of treatments to suit your needs. Botox for Bruxism cannot be expected to provide a complete or instant cure for Bruxism but it has been seen regularly to decrease and alleviate the damage and pain associated with Bruxism, leading to a high degree of patient satisfaction. In all cases an expert clinician will advise you on your treatment at Skin Medical.
